چکیده

The energy spectrum of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) interacting with a valence-band hole is studied in the high magnetic field limit as a function of the filling factor ν and the separation d between the electron and hole layers. For d smaller than the magnetic length λ, the hole binds one or more electrons to form neutral (X) or charged (X−) excitons. The low-lying states can be understood in terms of Laughlin-like correlations among the constituent charged fermions (electrons and X−). For d comparable to λ, the electron–hole interaction is not strong enough to bind a full electron, and fractionally charged excitons hQEn (bound states of a hole and one or more Laughlin quasielectrons, QE) are formed. The effect of these excitonic complexes on the photoluminescence spectrum is studied numerically for a wide range of values of ν and d.

Composite Fermions in Fractional Quantum Hall Systems

The composite Fermion (CF) picture offers a simple intuitive way of understanding many of the surprising properties of a strongly interacting twodimensional electron fluid in a large magnetic field. The simple way in which the mean field CF picture describes the low lying bands of angular momentum multiplets for any value of the applied magnetic field is illustrated and compared with the result...

Energy Levels of InGaAs/GaAs Quantum Dot Lasers with Different Sizes

In this paper, we have studied the strain, band-edge, and energy levels of cubic InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) surrounded by GaAs. It is shown that overall strain value is larger in InGaAs-GaAs interfaces, as well as in smaller QDs. Also, it is proved that conduction and valence band-edges and electron-hole levels are size dependent; larger QD sizes appeared to result in the lower recombination...

Spin transition of a two-dimensional hole system in the fractional quantum Hall effect

The effect of the complex valence-band Landau-level ~LL! structure on the fractional quantum Hall ~FQH! effect of a two-dimensional hole system has been studied in a modulation-doped quantum well ~QW! with front and back gates. Owing to the spin-orbit interaction and the band mixing in the valence band, changing the potential asymmetry of the QW with the front and back gates allows us to vary t...

Absorption and intensity-dependent photoluminescence measurements on CdSe quantum dots: assignment of the first electronic transitions

CdSe is used as a prototype to show the implications of valence-band degeneracy for the optical properties of strongly quantum-confined nanocrystals. Absorption spectra and photoluminescence spectra obtained under intermediate and strong pulsed excitation show the presence of new structures. The energy levels for the electron and the hole are calculated with the spherical confinement, the nonpa...

Novel Excitonic States in Quantum Hall Systems: Bound States of Spin Waves and a Valence Band Hole

If the Zeeman energy is small, the lowest energy excitations of a two dimensional electron gas at filling factor ν = 1 are spin waves (spin flip excitations). At ν slightly larger (smaller) than unity, reversed spin electrons (spin holes) can form bound states with K spin waves that are known as skyrmions, S− K (antiskyrmions, S K ). It is suggested in this work that a valence hole can also bin...
